What is grass track racing?
Motorcycle Grasstrack is a form of track racing which typically, in its current form, takes place on a flat track consisting of two straights and two bends usually constructed in a field
Grasstrack is one of the oldest types of motorcycle sports in the UK with the first meetings having taken place way back in the 1920s. In the modern era, it is generally similar to Speedway with races usually taking place over 4 laps from a standing start. Unlike Speedway, which has 4 riders per race, Grasstrack racing can have many riders in each heat and the circuit is normally longer allowing higher speeds. Grasstrack had three main solo classes, 250 cc, 350 cc and 500 cc together with three sidecar classes; left-handed 500 cc and 1000 cc (turning left) and right-handed 1000 cc (turning right).
There is now an exciting new class attracting many riders throughout the UK. Enter GT140 which is now becoming the biggest class.
These bikes are also proven on Speedway tracks up and down the UK. We have been holding the Island Masters event on the Isle of Wight for three years now. There will be many opportunities to ride other great speedway tracks such as Workington, Glasgow, Leicester, Buxton and Mildenhall to name a few.
so what is gt140?
The GT140 class was formed as recently as 2016 as an alternative to the many established solo grass track classes mentioned earlier. This class is now the fastest growing motorcycle sport in the UK with over 100 registered racers. We run full size twin-shock or the more modern monoshock chassis, powered by the robust Chinese YX140 Pitbike engine.
The racing is close, albeit slightly slower than the other Grass Track disciplines and has become the chosen class for many ex professional speedway riders coming back to the sport right through to novices joining the class for the very first time.
Grass Track has certainly seen a resurgence in the last few seasons due to the GT140 class with riders enjoying low maintenance and relatively cost effective machines, close racing and packed grids. There's also an ACU British Grasstrack Championship which is always closely contested, plus the NORA Masters Events.
There are many Grasstrack racing clubs up and down the country, simply enter a race meeting, turn up, put some petrol in and enjoy a fabulous day of racing in a controlled safe and well organised environment.
If you want to try your hand on a Speedway track, more circuits are offering the opportunity to practice or even enter a race meeting such as the GT140 Island Masters located on the Isle of Wight, plus more Speedway tracks will be available throughout 2026.

OFTR Racing is a brand new new Start-up company formed by Steve Newsham through a passion for racing motorcycles for many years. There is a massive gap in the market for a 'one-stop' shop for everything GT140.
The class is getting so busy and competitive, imagine having two categories of GT140. Now that would be entertaining.
The dream is that the ex pros and super fast riders who want to race their tuned GT140 will still compete in their mega competitive category, however what about the seasoned club racer who just wants to tip up at a race meeting and have some fun with their like minded racer mates?
In the 'S' category, everyone who signs up for the 'standard' class of GT140 would run the very same standard 'out of the box' YX140 engine, sealed so you cant tune, with total parity for all. Each engine, whether it's your own that we check and seal for you or you choose to purchase a brand new one from us, every motor will have a unique bar coded serial number, registered on a central database for total fairness.
It works in other disciplines of motorcycle racing. Imagine 10 or 12 racers all on exactly the same powered bike... around 14bhp makes for very close racing.
who is steve newsham
'Motorcycle racing has been part of my life for a mere 55 years, starting junior Grasstrack at the age of 8 in Lancashire. my father, the late Charlie Newsham, along with some mates formed the LGTJR, Lancashire Grass Track Junior Riders club back in 1971'.
'Over the years I've competed in Grasstrack, Pro Speedway, Flat Track, Sand Racing, Trials and couldn't be any more enthusiastic or passionate about our sport whilst now in my 60s. I am proud to have won a 500cc British Championship, a few club championships and am super proud to have raced professional speedway for Belle Vue and Barrow in the early 80's.
I now feel that I can offer much more to our sport, helping to grow and develop the GT140 class, bringing new blood to the sport, coaching new riders, developing specific motorcycles and promoting events.
It's all about having fun and riding our bikes with smiles on our faces. As rider myself, I have been guilty of being far too serious at the track... let's just have a day of fun, that's what its all about!
